The Deligram shines a spotlight on the many incredible food artisans of New York–and beyond. Last year, we launched a premium offering on substack, where paid subscribers will get additional content and more! In this issue, Caitlin Hubner, diner lover and founder of Cait’s Key Lime Pie, dishes out a few freebies–from her favorite makers and restaurants to the only acceptable order at a diner. And there’s a bonus for our premium subscribers.
Favorite products from makers: I think what's really cool is that I've formed connections with a lot of people who also make one thing. Through Instagram, I met this girl Allie who has a company called Allie's Banana Bread. She has a photography background and social media background, and makes this viral banana bread. It's one of those things where I was like, “How good could this banana bread be?” So I got it, and it’s so fucking good, holy shit.
Then there's this girl Dolly [Meckler], who I met the same way, who makes challah. Her company’s called Challah Dolly. It’s brilliant. She’s in a bunch of stores.
They both ship nationwide. It's been really inspirational to see other people doing one thing. I’m kind of obsessed with this idea now.
Favorite restaurants in New York City: Like the rest of Brooklyn, I am a huge Bonnie’s fan. I just went back to this place that I love in Jackson Heights called Lhasa Fast Food. I love Wu’s Wonton King. I love Minca Ramen. I am just entering into the season where all I want to eat is steaming hot bowls of soup. I am a creature of comfort. And I still love a diner.
Favorite diners: My favorite diner on earth is the one I grew up with, obviously, the Pompton Queen Diner. I am also a huge fan of the Tick Tock Diner on Route 3 in Clifton, NJ. In the city, it’s places like Roll-N-Roaster. White Manna Hamburgers in Jersey City, too. It’s untouched by time. The font, the logo, everything.
Go-to diner order: A cup of matzo ball soup, a turkey club with bacon, fries, and a Diet Coke with a lemon slice.
