In our quest to uncover the amazing artisanal products that we feature in The Deligram, we eat and drink a lot of different things. And not everything we love can be featured–sometimes it doesn’t technically fit our made-in-New York criteria, sometimes it’s not available for sale… and sometimes we just run out of time and space. That’s why we launched a new series–only for our premium Deligram subscribers–in which our co-founders Anna and Teddy share the delicacies they are obsessed with right now. In this issue, we’re sharing some of our favorite ice cream you can get in New York right now. Yes, summer’s over, but that means it’s the perfect time to get a scoop: It won’t melt before you can eat it.
So eat up this issue, and let us know your favorites or recent discoveries. We’re always looking for more tips from our friends–send us an email or a DM!
“Not strictly traditional but recognizably Italian, the team behind Locanda Vini e Olii and Camillo are slinging some of the best scoopable desserts from a cart in front of their Clinton Hill restaurant. With fresh, punchy flavors, like turmeric and cherry, olive oil and breadcrumbs and a surprisingly vegan pistachio, you really can’t go wrong.” Teddy
“For the past decade, Malai has given Brooklynites unique, spice-forward ice creams inspired by founder Pooja Bavishi’s South Asian family and upbringing. They are handcrafted, eggless, and churned with very little air, resulting in purer and more robust flavors. Anytime I’m in Carroll Gardens I volunteer to bring dessert to local friends and grab a pint or two of Masalai Chai or Spiced Peanut crunch ice cream. I haven't tried yet, but on my list for next time is the Gulab Jamun ice cream cake, a saffron syrup-infused cardamom cake filled with Rose and Cinnamon Roasted Almonds ice cream.” Anna
Ice Cream Window and Lady Moo Moo
“If you find yourself further east in Bed-Stuy or in Ridgewood, you’re in luck. Lady Moo Moo makes the ice cream that they sell at their Bed-Stuy window, but also creates custom flavors for the Ice Cream Window in Ridgewood. There’s a great neighborhood scoop shop feel at the two locations (and, as a resident of Bushwick, I am grateful to be equidistant to both). What’s better than someone handing you a cone with a smile? The Ice Cream Window has more limited hours and is already closed for the year, so you’ll have to wait until next season. (We promise, it’s worth it.)” Teddy
“While it’s almost impossible to snatch a table at Saraghina Pizza, there’s always consolation (at a price!) at the next door Saraghina Bakery. A good portion of my paycheck was already going to their bread and croissants, which are some of the best in town in my humble (French) opinion, but then I discovered their house-made gelato. The ingredients are exceptional–Tahitian vanilla, Sicilian pistachios, Venchi chocolate, maraschino cherries. At up to $19/pint, they aren’t my weeknight sweet, but they make for a perfect dessert when guests come over for dinner on weekends.” Anna
“Pastry chef Hannah Bae founded Noona’s to create Asian American-inspired ice cream flavors, which are delicious. We say, try them all, but if you’re looking for something refreshing we love the rose ginger, which is made vegan with the use of coconut milk.” Teddy
“Fini has been making waves for its quality pizza slices and fashionable merch drops, but a best kept secret there, for me, is their rotating menu of italian ices. Fini’s pastry chef pays tribute to New York’s classic lemon ices, creating creamy (yet dairy-free), scoops of deliciousness. Of the signature flavors, my favorite is almond, but follow along their instagram to catch their seasonal creations and fun ices collaborations (such as a recent one with Deligram fave Cait’s Key Lime!).” Anna
“For me, a trip to Superiority Burger isn’t complete without a scoop (or two) of ice cream at the end of the meal. Luckily, the team is now selling pints to go (for $18). The only problem is, which flavor to choose? The ever-changing list includes delectable flavors (both vegan and not) like Black Sesame with Concord Ripple, Coriander-Banana, Labne with Guava Ripple, and Fig Leaf…. the list goes on and on.” Teddy
“You already know we’re big fans of Bad Habit Ice Cream, now available at their East Village storefront Caleta. In fact, we worked with them on the first edition of The Deligram Drops! If you missed out on the sold-out sundae, no worries: As a premium subscriber, you’ll be the first to hear about our next collab.” Anna
