The One Condiment This Bon Appetit Creative Director Can’t Live Without
And more of her favorite things.
The Deligram shines a spotlight on the many incredible food artisans in New York–and beyond. So we look to our friends to help us discover the best of the best every day. This week, we spoke to Arsh Raziuddin, a graphic designer from the DC area who is now living and making things in Brooklyn, NY. By day, she’s the creative director at Bon Appetit and Epicurious. “I love food and pretty things, which makes my job feel like... Fun?” she says.
Her latest fun project at work: a redesign of Bon Appetit. “Before I officially started, [Bon Appetit] Editor in Chief Dawn Davis and I had discussions about what we wanted the magazine to look like, what changes we wanted to implement, and how to redefine what it means to be a part of Bon Appetit. I’ve always been obsessed with food, restaurants, and signage, so a part of me knew exactly what I wanted to do when I came in,” Raziuddin says. “I was awestruck and inspired by the vintage BA issues from the ‘60’s and ‘70s; I love ‘70s typography. It's funky and feminine, elegant yet quirky. I wanted to elevate the design of the magazine, authoritative but playful, a piece of work that transcends time and trends. The individual changes may feel subtle to some, but when put together it's quite dreamy.”
To celebrate the new issue, which came out a few days before Thanksgiving and is on newsstands now, we asked Raziuddin to share some of her other favorite things of the moment–and her all-time favorite Bon Appetit recipes.
My Favorite Things
The Trio of Knives, $150
“I’m actually a bit scared of sharp knives (and these are sharp!) but I still don’t want to hide them. These knives by Beverly Nguyen bring a chic flair to your kitchen.”
Brooklyn Delhi Tomato Achaar, $12
“I put this on everything, especially when I’m in a hurry. This brings a ton of flavor, fast.”
Diaspora Co’s Masala Dabba, 7 spices start at $200
“Is there anything Diaspora Co. can’t do? This dabba is all you need to make comforting and delicious Indian food at home.”
“I love following @kweenkaraza on Instagram. Her ceramics are bold and her calligraphy is close to perfect. I love the bold maximalist painting style and the colors are right up my alley.”
Haruko Hayakawa’s 3d Illustration Renderings
Haruko worked on Bon Appetit’s Future of Food issue in May. She brought this idea to life and I’ve been obsessed with her work ever since. She creates a utopia of food you wish you could eat.
